Finding the Perfect Statement Rug for Your Room

Finding the Perfect Statement Rug for Your Room

I’ll say it – I effing LOVE rugs. If I could have 40 rugs in my house, I would. But marriage is compromise and sometimes you have to compromise on obsessions. Instead, I have 3 rugs in the house. 3 is better than 40. Rugs just make bring a room together. They can brighten up the room, they add texture and color, and they are an easy accent to change out to completely alter the mood of your room. I love them.

But finding the perfect rug can be a pain in the ass, it can be expensive and it can honestly be stressful when you end up ruining it within months. Let’s face it, rugs can get nasty AF. People have children, they have pets, they have dirty ass shoes. And unless you are a Type A Monica Gellar freak, your rug is bound to get dirty and maybe even ruined. So I’m here to share my own experience in hopes of helping inspire you in your own rug decor and keep you from making the same mistakes I did when I first moved into our home.

Let’s start off with the basics – DON’T, I repeat DO NOT buy a white rug. The only home that should have a white rug is a home without children, animals or people. Those homes are welcome to have white rugs. All other homes, stay away. If you’re saying right now – I have a white rug and love it – well God Bless you, child. You have my patience than I. I bought a white rug when we first moved into our home and LOVED it. I was completely obsessed with it…until 4 months later when it looked like we lived in a frat house. So what did I do? I got it washed…and ended up going through the worst experience of my life with a guy who didn’t know what he was doing, completely overcharged me, and I’m pretty sure may murder me someday since he knows where I live.

So back to my point – f*ck white rugs. But that doesn’t mean some white can’t be pulled into the rug colors itself. Since we have dark wood tables and a dark grey couch, I’m always looking for lighter colors in my rug so the room still looks bright and open when you walk in. But look for some off white colors or even lighter grey. That way, when you have a party and people don’t take their shoes off (because duh, making your guest take their shoes off is offensive – watch Sex & The City for an example) and someone walks on your rug, well, it’s not the end of the world. Because that dirty is going to blend with those off whites and grey. Gross, but true.

That’s also why I love texture and patterns on a rug. When you have different patterns and textures, some of the imperfections that come along with having a house full of animals and friends will be hidden. That means not having to replace a $500 (or more) rug every few months. Who wants that? Definitely not me. I about had a panic attack when I spent more on cleaning my white rug than I had spent on just purchasing it. After my own rug debacle, I found the rug I have now and I absolutely LOVE it! It brings amazing texture to the room, it’s bright without being offensive to my husband (not as into the insane colors as I am) and it hides the dirt that we constantly bring onto it daily. We suck at taking our shoes off and yes, I know that’s gross, but it’s the truth.

But if my rug isn’t for you, I’m linking a ton of different colors, textures and patterns below to help inspire your own room! It’s such an easy way to change up a room or bring a little fresh feel into your house so hopefully this post gets your excited for a little spring sprucing. Is sprucing a word? It is now.

Jackson loves this rug! So much so that he’s actually thrown up on it 3 times. Our hardwood floors just don’t do it for him, but this rug, it’s his prime puking spot. Thank you, Jackson. You’re so kind.

Good luck rug shopping and getting excited to walk into your house daily! If you’re not excited, go find some inspiration for your own space so you love the room you get to hang out in daily!
